Credit Costs: How much can you afford?
The "20-10 rule" makes a good rule of thumb for understanding how much credit you can afford.

The 20 refers to: Never borrow more than 20% of your yearly net income (not including your housing or mortgage debt).

The 10 refers to: Monthly payments should not exceed 10% of your monthly net income.
